All week I have been thinking about this film—and specifically the burning bulls. I did a search and saw the comments here. :)

I am a film student at the University of Santa Cruz and recently had to give a presentation on the remake of Yojimbo into Fistful of Dollars in front of a Berkley professor who has devoted a lot of research into Japanese cinema. He gave a lecture on Miike specifically which—going with our course material—focused on Sukyaki Western Django and the comparison of national cinema with filmic appropriation. I was super impressed with how he analyzed the very beginning of that film and as much as I thought I loved Miike...I walked away thinking there was so much I never realized this director was trying to get across in his films.

I had watched 13 Assassins about a week before this lecture and I immediately loved it. I think that Miike's intention was always to produce this film within a nationalist perspective, but at the same time through a more western lens (to further the point of the article: we as westerners are constantly subject to a suicidal code of honor we never fully reconcile with).

I think that it might be that he intentionally put the bulls into the film to startle the eye and to make a subtle comment about general zealousness or extremism. Doing any research on the imagery of burning bulls eventually comes back to religion (usually Catholicism) and even before (Phalaris' Brazen Bull).

But I do agree, the CG was a little lacking. It's Miike. He has never been known for his CG (though Yokia War was awesome) and opts instead for excessive imagery to hammer in a concept.

Just something I was thinking about. :)

Have you read the book? I was sorely disappointed that this movie took a great, classy ghost novel and tried to turn it into a fright fest. I think my viewing experience was also somewhat tarnished by the 100 or so tweenage girls who shrieked every time something wicked popped out (or even threatened to pop out) from behind a corner. The book is far more dark and serious; you may enjoy it more than you did the movie.

I think if you've played a character like Harry Potter for the last ten years, you should consider getting as far away as possible from your next movie role being, in anyway, similar to the role you just spent a life time portraying. Having said that the entire cast did fine work in a very slow, dull witted script. I was glad to see HAMMER Films back in the moving making business... but need to up date production value to the 21st century.

Red Tails was bittersweet for me. I agree with you in that the romantic relationship and the downed pilot subplots served no purpose and took away from the more important issue of character development. I would have preferred to see flashbacks of incidents affecting some of the characters. And yes many of the scenes had a comic book flavor to them, but the main purpose was served. And that was informing the public on a group of men that fought bravely for a country that was not fighting for them. Lost among some fictional elements were many facts. Many if not all of the Tuskegee Airmen were college graduates, the scene of the pilot taking out the german destroyer actually happened, and the record of bomber losses the fighters were protecting stand out as a few.
The movie could have been better and many of the stereotypes and cliches were ridiculous, but Red Tails is a must see just for the historical component. I was surprised at how many people never knew they existed, let alone made a contribution to the war effort. Its rare for an audience, black and white, to applaud after a movie. So I believe, everyone appreciates the accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen.

I came here specifically for info regarding the piano arrangement of We Three Kings! I rarely stick around for the end credits, but I was captivated by Maxwell Knight's rendition. Haunting. I have to search for this now - I've read that there will be no official soundtrack for the movie. Hopefully Knight wins an award, however.
